Your visit begins in the heart of Alsunga, where local Suiti hosts greet you with traditional snacks and a gentle introduction to their unique cultural identity. A short walk leads you to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the area, where the peaceful landscape reveals the quiet charm of the region.

Moments of leisure are thoughtfully woven into the experience — a stop at a local bakery, time to browse handcrafted souvenirs, and the opportunity to engage with the village atmosphere without rush or pressure.

The journey continues with a visit to the Alsunga Castle, where history and local stories come together, followed by a hands-on culinary workshop where you will learn to prepare one of the region’s most iconic dishes.

A shared traditional meal brings everyone together around the table — an essential part of Suiti culture, where food is not only about taste, but also about connection.

In the afternoon, you will travel to the nearby Baltic Sea coast, where dramatic cliffs and open horizons offer a refreshing contrast to the village setting and a moment to simply enjoy nature.

The Livonian Order Castle of Alsunga is a historic 14th-century fortress that stands as a symbol of the region’s rich cultural heritage and medieval past.

Visiting Alsunga Castle is not about grand halls or polished luxury — it is about standing where history quietly changed the destiny of a small community.

Here, you understand how the Suiti identity was formed and why it survived. Within these walls, faith, politics, and determination shaped a cultural uniqueness that still lives today. The castle gives context — it connects the songs you hear, the costumes you see, and the stories you experience to their deeper roots.

You leave with perspective: not just knowing who the Suiti are, but understanding why they exist at all.

St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Alsunga is a remarkable 17th-century sanctuary known for its impressive Baroque interior and deep roots in the Catholic traditions of the Suiti region.

Stepping into St. Michael’s Church, you enter the spiritual core of the Suiti community. This is where faith became the anchor that held their identity together through centuries of change.

Inside, you feel the atmosphere — calm, intimate, and deeply resonant. The church helps you understand that the Suiti story is not only about costumes and songs, but about belief, resilience, and continuity. It adds emotional depth to the experience and allows a quiet moment of reflection within your journey.

Alsunga Crafts House is a vibrant cultural space where visitors can experience traditional Suiti crafts, local skills, and hands-on workshops that keep regional heritage alive.

At the Alsunga Crafts House, you move from hearing the story to touching it. This is where heritage lives in hands — in threads, clay, wood, and careful repetition passed down through generations.

You gain insight into the everyday creativity that keeps the Suiti culture alive. It is not a distant past on display, but a living process you can observe, understand, and sometimes even try yourself. The Crafts House gives you connection — to people, to skill, and to the quiet pride of making something that carries meaning.

We almost skipped the guide, but choosing the tour with the bagpipes in the church turned out to be the highlight of our visit. The sound echoing through the church was powerful, emotional, and completely unforgettable. It felt like stepping into centuries of living tradition — truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I was honestly scared to try  locat carrot pie because of all the jokes… but plot twist — it’s actually really good. Sweet, salty, cozy, and super unique. Like a dessert and a snack had a Latvian countryside baby.

Moral of the story: don’t trust memes, trust your taste buds. If you visit Alsunga, you HAVE to try one.

it is no coincidence that the Suiti cultural space is on the UNESCO list. The singing Suiti women are truly something special and deeply moving – living traditions like this are very rare in Europe today. Our visit to Alsunga felt warm and authentic. I highly recommend combining a trip to Alsunga with nearby Kuldīga, whose unique old town is also UNESCO listed. Together they make a wonderful and culturally rich journey.

The traditional costumes, music, and warm welcome from locals made us feel like we stepped into a living story. It felt real, not touristy. We especially loved the peaceful countryside and sincere people.

I visited Alsunga in September 2025, and one of the highlights of my trip was the knitting workshop. It was such a warm and welcoming experience. I’m truly grateful to the Craft House and all the lovely knitters who patiently shared their skills and stories with us. It felt cozy, inspiring, and very special – a beautiful memory I will take home to Denmark.
